About Karl

Karl Racine has served as the first elected Attorney General of the District of Columbia since 2015. As Attorney General, he has worked to build an independent office that fights for District residents at both the local and national level. He has pushed for reforms to the juvenile justice system, established an Office of Consumer Protection, took legal action to protect low-income tenants, and has been involved in numerous lawsuits aimed at stopping harmful Trump administration actions, including the Muslim Ban.

Prior to his election, Racine practiced law for over 25 years, working at the DC Public Defender Service, as Associate White House Counsel to President Bill Clinton, and as the first African American Managing Partner of a top-100 American law firm at Venable LLP. He was born in Haiti and came to the District as a child when his family fled an oppressive regime. He holds degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Virginia School of Law. He is currently co-chair of the Democratic Attorney’s General Association.
